As with many of our favorite books, we found this first at the library, but eventually bought our own copy as the renewals became embarrassing. My son discovered this book last spring, and has stayed enthralled and entertained by it, even now, many months, and many reads later. When asked to draw pictures of his favorite character during his first week of Kindergarten, he picked Pirate Pup.

I love the gentleness of this book. It presents an intriguing adventure story, but one appropriate for small children, hungering to be out on the high seas. There is also a fair amount of humour that my son, at 5, can appreciate, and which keeps him chuckling. The illustrations are well done, and detailed, allowing for deep reads even by a non-reader. Overall I found this a nice change from our other pirate books, adding a slight twist and attention to the artwork refreshing.

Wonderful book especially for cat and dog lovers. Stutson is a gifted, creative, writer, always writing in verse. Illustrations are delightful.

My boys ages 5 and 3 love this book and I did too. It was a nice accompaniment to the owl and the pussy cat that is also written in iambic pentameter.
